Genre
Sound
One of the biggest conventions challenged was the genre of the film. There are not many horror movies that have the sub-genre coming of age which made our movie a little harder to relate to others. One movie we can relate our movie to is 'Nightmare on Elm Street' which we got our idea of a "rude awakening" from. We liked the idea of our protagonist having mental issues, so that we could explore his world and how he overcomes his problem and perhaps make the audience think, "if you could see the future how would you try to change it and what happens if you do?". The biggest issue for us was showing the audience the sub-genre is coming of age as we only had 3 minutes to do so. We did this by having a text that his mother sent him as which shows he still has responsibilities like a normal teen would. We also had him take a knife as this shows that he is not afraid and is determined to overcome his problem
Another convention that we challenged in our opening sequence was sound in coming of age movies. Most of the sounds used in these films, especially in the opening sequence, are nice and have a good atmosphere but our movie is a psychological thriller so it needed from "threatening music. We also added ambient sounds which help give of a gives off an eerie vibe to allow the audience early on to realise something will happen. The opening scene starts with slow music but begins getting more intense until eventually it stops suddenly leaving the audience to think and try to guess what will happen next.
