In the coming of age genre the traditional narrative is the main character having a problem or problems they must overcome in the main storyline. The main focus of the plot is usually the character attempting to find a solution for this problem. Our opening sequence directly portrays one of our characters major problems and how he prepares to deal with it. We have chosen that the problem our character will overcome is his newly found "superpower" or "curse". This movie was inspired by movies like 'Final Destination' but we added a more coming of age feel to it. Another coming of age convention is the characters ability to live with their flaws and maybe even be able to improve their life using them which would give the impression of a strong-willed person.
Narrative of story
We noticed that in the coming of age genre that the main characters are usually from an age range of teenagers to young adults, who are just starting to begin making their own decisions but still have responsibilities and still live with their parents. So using this as a template of some sort we thought that our character should still be attending school and still have normal chores. We decided to base our main character, Chris, around this information. His outfit and personality show that of a normal teenagers which would help our target audience feel like they are able to empathise. This is a popular convention, because it means that the targeted audience can relate to the character even though they aren't having the same problems that he is.
The opening sequence of our film is located in a suburban neighbourhood which features a local shop and has the characters house nearby. Our beginning shot is of the small shop which our main character can be seen walking out of moments later. We did this to set the scene and the location like the popular coming of age movie Breakfast Club. We also included our character waking up inside of his house as the protagonist's house is almost always a key location within the narrative of the film. We took inspiration from Ferris Bueller's Day Off because a lot of the scenes are shot in the same location.
